If you remember a month back or so, VoiceCentral teased us with a Google Voice WebApp that would be amazingly fast and access all functions and contacts. Well today I got to test out the beta, and let me tell you--its good.
Setup: You get an email directing you to an iPhone optimized webpage that instructs you to "download" the application by saving a shortcut to the webapp on your iPhone homescreen. This is a celever and slick way into tricking people into thinking that they are downlaoding a local app, instaed of simply using a covered web-browser window to access a webapp.
Use: The application can "download" your google voice contacts and switches relatively quickly compared to the local "GV Mobile". Everything can be displayed in both portrait and landscape mode without any hiccups or dead space. I places a test call and it responded quickly as well. The graphics in this webapp are what really makes this application stand apart. If I didn't know better I would swear that it was running locally. The smooth transitioning and system status notifications are so smooth that it is hard to understand how this works from the cloud.
Implications: As VoiceCentral teased earlier, this can be a game changer. With the lines blurring between locally stored applications and web applications, we can start to see alternative and independent avenues for application distribution that will not have to be approved or sanctioned by apple. This can be the start of something good...
