Next week TouchMyApples.com is going to post a step-by-step idiots guide to Jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod touch. In combination with that tutorial, we want to show you why you would want to jailbreak by highlighting the new capabilities you can enjoy if you do.
In this first post, we will highlight the absolute first necessity after a jailbreak--the ability to multitask using a program called "backgrounder". As you know the iPhone allows you to control the iPod functions while using any other program. But beyond that, there is little you can do to control a second program while using a first program. For instance, let's say that you like listening to music using the Pandora applications. While listening to music you cannot check your email, surf the web, or anything else without first exiting the program and stopping your music. Or let's say that you want to pause a conversation you are having using an instant messaging program to check something via the internet, but you don't want to logout and back into the instant messaging program to do so. Without backgrounder you would have no choice. But with backgrounder installed, you can merely hold down the Home button for 2-3 seconds and the program will remain running while you do other tasks with your iPhone. Later, when you re-open the backgrounded program you can hold the Home button for another 2-3 seconds and then stop it from running in the background. It really is that simple.
With that said, it isn't smart to have your little phone running too many programs at once. Programs running means the phone is using up power and the computing capabilities are being stretched. But running just 2-3 programs at once can sometimes make a world of a difference. If you needed just one reason to jailbreak, this is it.
